Teaching Resilience to the next Generation

Updated: Sep 9, 2021

As a parent, you wish you could protect your children from every disappointment, defeat, or scary challenge.

Although this isn’t possible, you can teach your children to be resilient, which I believe is something that will assist them to overcome challenges in their childhood, whilst also preparing them with the skills required to be successful in their future careers.

Whether they have dreams of becoming an Olympic Medallist, a Successful CEO or an Astronaut - the youth of today will face increasing pressures along their journeys to success. It is our job to teach the next generation how to solve problems and overcome challenges so that they can become confident, independent, and successful in fulfilling their dreams.

I am a father of two, and a stepfather of one, and my eldest daughter Ava is 13, which means she is well into her formative years. Like all teenagers she has a range of pressures, from peers, social media, education and of course me. As a busy entrepreneur, I understand that the day-to day demands can be challenging and learning to overcome the daily routines pressures can be testing for them. However, I believe that in order to teach the next generation to achieve greatness they need to overcome challenges on a larger scale.

"You will never know your limits unless you push yourself to them"

This summer Ava and I worked on pushing her limits through a range of extreme adrenaline activities. Together we climbed Ben Nevis, completed Honister Pass and participated in a range of extreme water sports activities; as a result, she learned resilience and the impact this has on what she is able to achieve through perseverance.

Those people willing to take risks, to push their boundaries, to strive into the unknown unafraid. Those people who continue to seek rich new experiences and who actively pursue challenges; these are the ones who gain immeasurable rewards and successes. This applies personally, professionally, emotionally, and spiritually and with every challenge comes new insight - which I believe is the key to teaching resilience to the next generation to achieve greatness.
